What is Discrimination

Discrimination is when a person is treated unfairly or differently from someone else because they possess certain characteristics. The Equality Act 2010 highlights 9 protected characteristics: Age, Gender, Race, Disability, Religion, Pregnancy and maternity, Sexual orientation, Gender reassignment, Marriage and civil partnership.

Any discrimination that happens due to any of the above mentioned characteristics is potentially unlawful under the Equality Act. If you are treated differently because someone thinks you belong to a particular group of people with protected characteristics, this may also be unlawful discrimination.
